In an interview with Financial Times, Google’s managing director in Southeast Asia, Rajan Anandan, acknowledged that Android One had “not delivered to expectations,” but the company is still “very committed” to the initiative. It holds a lot of promise so the Internet giant is relaunching Android One in the country.
The promised relaunch comes as some of Google’s early Android One partners voiced their doubts about the roadmap for the program. The initiative was originally launched back in September last year and recently got the Lava Pixel V1 as the first mid-range smartphone.
India is an attractive market for companies that make low-cost smartphones because more people are now able to afford a smartphone, often for the first time. Some of Google’s flagship apps like YouTube and Maps require larger amounts of bandwidth than what most Android One customers in India have (or want to pay for).
To help with that, Google has put in place a major investment program to bring tens of millions of businesses online with content focused on India’s population, content that can be accessed by these low cost handsets Google is pushing.
