Apple’s monumental California HQ to open in April

Apple does not do things by half measures. It is after all one of the world’s most familiar brands, and biggest sellers of gadgets and home computers ever. Such a massive company deserves a huge headquarters, and that is exactly what it is getting in the form of the 175-acre Apple Park.

London’s Foster + Partners, the studio founded by noted architect Norman Foster, is behind Apple’s new $5 billion HQ campus. It is a project that has been in the works for over half a decade, since the brand’s co-founder Steve Jobs announced the project in his last public appearance at a 2011 Apple event.

Apple Park was envisioned as a centre of creativity and collaboration. Miles of asphalt at the site has been transformed into green haven, nestled in the heart of California’s beautiful Santa Clara Valley. It will be a major landscaping achievement once completed, as well as a great exercise in corporate architectural collaboration.

A ring-shaped 2.7 million square foot main building dominates Apple Park. Due to the sheer size of this structure, it contains the world’s largest panels of curved glass. A 1,000 seat auditorium, dubbed the “Steve Jobs Theatre”, in honour of Apple’s sadly departed CEO, will take pride of place on one of the park’s highest points. Overlooking meadows and the circular main building, the Theatre has been described as “a 20ft-tall glass cylinder, 165ft in diameter, supporting a carbon-fibre roof.”

A visitor’s centre, alongside an Apple store and café open to the public, will also be at Apple Park. Apple staff will enjoy a 100,000 square foot fitness and welfare centre, in addition to research and development facilities.

Two miles of walking and running paths for staff have also been included in the green spaces. Meadows, orchards, and even a pond, are being installed in Apple Park’s grounds. Apple claims the project does away with “5 million square feet of asphalt and concrete”, to be replaced with grassy fields and over 9,000 native and drought-resistant trees.

Additionally, it is to be powered by 100% renewable energy. An array of rooftop solar panels, Apple claims, generates over 17 megawatts of power. The park’s owners claim this is one of the largest on-site solar energy installations in the world. In terms of temperature control, Apple Park will be home to the world’s largest naturally ventilated building. No heating or air-conditioning is to be required for at least nine months of the year at the circular central structure.

A February-press release has stated mover than 12,000 workers are to be moved into Apple Park over the next six months. Initial occupants will be on-site by April 2017 at the latest. Construction of some buildings and the surrounding parklands will continue throughout the summer.
